Sleep as Medicine

Sleep isn’t just rest—it’s the body’s most powerful medicine for recovery, energy, and long-term health. - Parveen Kaur , MD

As a physician, I spend a lot of time reminding my patients that sleep is not a luxury—it’s medicine. But sometimes, the lesson hits home in the most personal ways. My daughter is part of her high school’s cross-country team. Like many student-athletes, she trains hard, balancing long runs, strength workouts, schoolwork, and the social buzz of teenage life. She’s motivated, disciplined, and competitive. But a few weeks into the season, she came to me with a problem:

“Mom, my legs are cramping all the time, and I feel tired even after an easy run.”

We talked through her training, nutrition, and hydration. Everything seemed in order. Then I asked her, “How much sleep are you getting?” Her answer—“about 5 to 6 hours most nights”—was the real diagnosis.

The Turning Point

We made a deal: for the next two weeks, she would aim for 8 to 9 hours of sleep each night. It wasn’t easy at first. Homework, phone scrolling, and late-night group chats were her usual routine. But gradually, she adjusted—closing her laptop earlier, setting her phone aside, and giving her body the rest it was craving.

The change was remarkable.

  • Her muscle cramps disappeared.
  • She woke up with more energy and focus.
  • Her running times improved, and she recovered faster between workouts.
  • Most importantly, her mood lifted—she was smiling again at breakfast instead of dragging her feet out the door.

Why Sleep Works Like Medicine

What happened with my daughter wasn’t magic—it was physiology. During deep sleep, the body:

  • Repairs muscles stressed by training.
  • Releases growth hormone, essential for recovery.
  • Balances hormones that regulate appetite and energy.
  • Consolidates memory and learning, which helps not only in school but also in mastering athletic techniques.

Without enough rest, even the best training and nutrition plan will fall short. The body simply can’t rebuild what it breaks down.

The Lesson for All of Us

You don’t have to be a cross-country runner to benefit from this medicine. Whether you’re an athlete, a busy professional, or a parent juggling a packed schedule, sleep is the foundation for health.

Think of it this way:

  • Exercise is the stimulus.
  • Nutrition is the fuel.
  • Sleep is the repair shop.

Without that repair shop running smoothly, everything else starts to unravel.

A Takeaway from My Family to Yours

Watching my daughter thrive after making sleep a priority was a reminder to me, too. We live in a culture that praises productivity, late-night studying, and early-morning workouts. But real strength comes not just from pushing harder, but from knowing when to rest. So the next time you feel fatigued, achy, or stuck in a cycle of stress—don’t just ask, “What am I doing wrong?” Ask, “Am I sleeping enough?”

Sometimes, the best prescription is simply an earlier bedtime.
